Augmented reality software companies Metaio and Zspace have teamed up to create the Ferrari Augmented Reality Showroom. This app, exclusive to auto showrooms, allows buyers to visually customize their potential Ferrari vehicles in real-time. The software works by having rear-facing cameras on tablets scan the car and from there, create a virtual image where the buyer can swap paint color, wheel models, brakes and other accessories without having to leave the showroom.
Being able to provide potential buyers with a customized version of the car of their dreams within seconds is an awesome capability for anyone hoping to pursue an auto sales career, but the app doesn’t stop at just the look of the car. Good news for anyone looking to become a mechanic, the app lets owners see beneath the surface as well! It shows the powertrain, a zoomed-in 3D view of the engine and braking system, and can even demonstrate the car’s aerodynamics by creating a virtual wind tunnel.
The app is coming to Ferrari dealerships later this year, first in Japan, Australia and New Zealand and eventually in the US. Let’s take a look at the companies who produced the new app as well as the five Ferrari models currently being showcased.
The App Designers
Metaio is a privately held company that provides augmented reality (AR) solutions. With locations in San Francisco, New York and Dallas, they are considered the worldwide leader in AR technology. They have a long list of elite clients including companies such as Red Bull, Microsoft, Honda, Toyota and Audi.
zSpace is a technology based firm located right in the heart of Silicon Valley. They specialize in 3D holographic imaging displays that allow people to interact with simulated objects. Their product, the zSpace system, has received rave reviews and the company is even collaborating with NASA for their technology to be tested for use in robots.
The Exclusive Featured Models
So far the app works with five Ferrari models, which means limitless customizing options for anyone pursuing an automotive career. For all you auto enthusiasts out there, here’s a closer look at the cars the app will showcase in Ferrari showrooms later this year:
- Ferrari says the 458 Speciale and its unique, convertible counterpart the 458 Spider boast the highest output naturally aspirated V-8 engine of all time. With a 597 horsepower rating, they go from 0-60 in three seconds.
- The versatile Ferrari FF hatchback has room for four full-sized adults with an all-wheel drive system. With a top speed of 208mph, this is no ordinary family vehicle! The FF packs a 6.3 liter V12 engine that produces 651hp. Ferrari says it can go from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds—from a dead stop!
- The Ferrari California was designed for daily ease and use. Powered by a 552hp, 3.9-liter V-8 mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, the California is plenty quick and agile, though maybe not as powerful as a 458.
- The F12 Berlinetta is a mid-engine, rear wheel drive grand tourer. It has a naturally aspirated 6.3 liter V12 engine in this model won the International Engine of the Year award in 2013.
