What Students in Automotive Technology Programs Should Know About Tesla's Rival: Lucid Motors
Tesla gets almost all the press for its stylish and powerful electric cars, but a few new players are looking to take a bite out of its high-end electric vehicle (EV) territory. One entrant that’s making a splash is Lucid Motors.
Lucid Motors has a lot of ground to make up and will need to convince the world that its cars are the smartest buy for EV enthusiasts who have a fair amount of cash, but its early showings have enough promise that people are starting to take notice.
If you’re considering automotive technology training, you might want to learn more about this new arrival in the world of high-powered electric cars. Here’s a look at Lucid Motors.
Students in Automotive Technology Programs: Lucid Motors Is a Long-Time EV Presence
Lucid Motors has been around for a decade now, and has spent most of that time developing battery systems for other manufacturers of EVs to use. In 2014, the company changed its course by designing its own electric vehicle: the Lucid Air, which is set to be released in 2019.
The timing of the release could be perfect for Lucid Motors’ first car. Though Tesla made its name by building luxury EVs like the Roadster, the Model S, and the Model X, it’s now throwing itself into building an EV for the masses: the Model 3. This could leave the door open for other companies, like Lucid, to find success by offering a compelling new entrant on the luxury EV market.
Students in Automotive Technology Programs Might See a Lucid Car In 2019
A lot can happen over the span of several years, so there’s no guarantee that Lucid’s current plan will hold up. If it does, though, you can expect to see the Lucid Air arrive in 2019.
Production levels are expected to be very low at first. According to Lucid Motors, the company only expects to produce 10,000 units in the first 12 months and up to 60,000 units by 2022. That means it’s unlikely that graduates of mechanic training, a hybrid vehicles training program, or other related areas of expertise will get their hands on a Lucid car anytime soon—but it is something you can eventually look forward to. Given the company’s intention of positioning itself as a luxury brand, producing limited numbers of vehicles is to be expected.
Early Buzz about the Lucid Air Is Promising – It Could Be a Big Deal
If you’re considering enrolling in an automotive technology program, you likely already know that today’s luxury cars should be stylish, fast, and technologically advanced. Most of the early buzz suggests that the Lucid Air hits these marks.
The base model will offer 400 horsepower and a range of about 386 km. It’ll also have all the necessary hardware for fully autonomous driving for when the technology is ready. Buyers looking for a bit more oomph can upgrade to 1,000 horsepower, all-wheel drive capability, and a range of 507 or 643 km. For the sake of comparison, the Tesla Model S currently offers a maximum horsepower of about 670, and a base range of 372 km with options up to 572 km.
Other buzz-worthy features of the vehicle include a sleek interior and four screens for media and controls. For individuals who want to splurge, there’s an option to add a glass canopy roof. Altogether, the Lucid Air has a pretty compelling mix of features that have been well-received by many individuals who follow EV news.
With companies like Faraday Future, Audi, Porsche, and more also entering the luxury EV space, Lucid will have stiff competition in its bid to capture the hearts and minds of wealthy EV buyers. Only time will tell if its mix of style and power will be its ticket to the big time.
