Selling a used car will take more work than selling a new one. This shouldn’t be a surprise, but there are ways you can expedite the process and make a quick sale that will leave the client satisfied. You’ll want to reassure them that the car is in the best possible shape despite being used, and you’ll also want to ensure you get maximum value in return.
Although you may be antsy to get a quick return on the vehicle you’re selling, it’s worth taking the necessary steps first to make the client happy with their new purchase. Here’s how you can master the art of selling used cars.
Get Every Maintenance Job Done Before Putting the Vehicle on the Market
The first step any car salesperson should take is to make sure the used car they’re selling is in the best possible condition before handing it off to a new buyer. This means getting all necessary maintenance on it done beforehand. Be sure all parts are in working order, you’ve checked the brakes, you’ve detailed the vehicle, you’ve thoroughly cleaned and washed it, and that all fluids have been topped off.
Not only will the car be in tip-top shape before going to its new buyer, but it will look more presentable in ads and on the car lot, too. You’ll also want to have your maintenance records saved, for the sake of reassuring clients that the car has been well-maintained.
Make Sure the Price is Right — and is Also Competitive with Other Used Vehicles
Perhaps the easiest way to make sure you don’t close a sale on a used car after auto sales school is by pricing it noticeably higher than other used vehicles on the market. All the extra perks in the world won’t convince the buyer to shell out more money than they’re comfortable with for a car that isn’t brand new.
With that in mind, don’t overprice your vehicle and risk having clients shy away from purchasing it. Once you have a price in mind, allow the prospective buyer the freedom to negotiate, as they will often want to do this if possible. You also don’t want to price your vehicle too low, either — research market prices for that car and make sure you have a price high enough that you can get a strong return while also not turning clients away.
After Auto Sales School, Educate Yourself on Everything About the Car You’re Selling
It goes without saying that whether you’re selling a used car or a new one during your automotive sales career, clients will have plenty of questions about them. Therefore, take the necessary time beforehand to do your homework about the vehicle and be able to answer anything they might ask confidently.
This includes details such as the exact make and model, its overall mileage, storage capabilities, horsepower and torque, the type of engine it runs on, and the transmission, to name just a few. Researching the specs and features of the used car you’re selling could also help you detect any repairs or maintenance you need to perform, if necessary.
