Ford Partners with Ontario Company for Next Supercar

North American International Auto Show 2015

It looks like auto sales college graduates in the Toronto area may soon have the chance to sell a locally-made supercar. Toronto-based company Multimatic Motorsports, a longtime partner in Ford’s racing division, will build the 2017 Ford GT supercar at its “purpose-built” facility in Markham, Ontario. Read on to find out more about the upcoming vehicle and when we can expect to see its official launch.

Why Multimatic Motorsports?

Multimatic Motorsports is known for designing and developing lightweight composite automotive systems. Multimatic has a total of 12 manufacturing facilities within Canada, the U.S., Mexico, England and China. The company has worked with Ford for approximately 30 years, so it’s no surprise at all that Ford has recently decided to choose Multimatic Motorsports’ Ontario-based facility to assemble their all-new, limited edition sports car, the GT.

Mark Vejgman, Ford Canada’s marketing manager explained the reasons behind the Multimatic pairing, stating “We chose to partner with them because they have specialized equipment for carbon fibre production and expertise in carbon fibre assembly.”And, since Ford aims to build a sports car that’s light weight and powerful, any mechanic college graduate can see how this union is ideal.

The 2017 GT

The GT that Multimatic will be building is going to be one of the cars marketed under the banner of Ford’s new “Performance Division”. It will be a supercar in every sense of the word, and here’s why:

Ford has traded in its all-aluminium body panels featured in its 2005 models, for an all-new innovative body construction which combines aluminium with lightweight carbon fibre. The new model will have aluminium front and rear subframes enclosed in carbon fibre body panels. This GT also boasts a carbon fibre passenger compartment.

The car will be powered by a V6 3.5-litre 600 horsepower engine, which the auto manufacturer has redesigned using its EcoBoost technology. Individuals who have taken auto mechanic courses will no doubt be impressed to learn that the vehicle’s engine is designed with the intentions of producing more power for its size. The GT is to feature only two seats that are accessible through a pair of very sporty scissor doors.

When Will It Launch?

Though no information on pricing and available quantity has been released yet, analysts expect the auto company to build only a few hundred of these GTs each year, and they could potentially cost more than $200,000 each. The first batch of 2017 GTs will launch at the end of next year. Ford has explained that this early release has been conveniently timed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Do you think the Ford GT will live up to the hype and become a high-end supercar?
