After two whole long decades of only being able to enviously observe the Honda Civic Type R on foreign soils, car fans in North America are finally able to fall in love with the latest Type R in person.

With its fierce appearance brought to life by edgy angles and accents, this Japanese speed demon of a hatchback is turning lots of heads. Top Gear named it ‘Car of the Year’ in 2017 and it has also picked up numerous other noteworthy awards like What Car?‘s ‘Hot Hatch of the Year.’ So what makes the Type R so impressive? Keep reading to find out!

1. Students in Auto Mechanic College Revel in the Type R’s Speed Capabilities

Setting new speed records is a big deal, and the latest Honda Civic Type R has managed to do just that in the front-wheel-drive category on the Nürburgring lap, a loop of tarmac in Germany used for speed testing. The Civic clocked in at 7 minutes and 43.8 seconds, managing to beat the previous record holder, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S, by an impressive margin of 5.41 seconds!

So what’s behind the wind beneath the Type R’s wings? Besides literally having a giant rear wing along with protruding air manipulators and a row of Evo VIII FQ-400 vortex generators on its roof, the automobile boasts 306 horsepower, 295 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This impressive performance package, along with a lightness not typical for its class, enables the Civic Type R to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in an impressive 5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 270 km/h!

2. The Type R Is a Favorite Contender in This Year’s British Touring Car Championship

Speaking of speed, this slick driving machine is set to make a much anticipated appearance in the 2018 British Touring Car Championship, one of the most popular motor racing championships worldwide. Honda has actually been known to dominate the BTCC in the past, but the championship title has eluded the Japanese car company for the past two years in favor of BMW.

Motor enthusiasts are excited to see if Honda will snag back the title this year, especially since it will have triple BTCC champion Matt Neal as one of the drivers behind the wheel along with newly signed Dan Cammish. Securing a win this year with the latest Civic Type R would be one for the books for Honda, as it just happens to be the BTCC’s 60th anniversary.

3. A Great Grip and Powerful Brakes Make the Civic Type R a Joy to Handle

Besides getting to enjoy the Civic Type R’s speed, those who get to drive it are also able to revel in the car’s superb ability to balance speed with control. It can maintain a great grip at mighty high speeds, even when whizzing around corners.

Added control comes in the form of brilliant Brembo brakes. Students at auto mechanic college know these make it onto some of the coolest cars out there, like the 2019 Mustang Bullitt for example. And for good reason! These four-piston, 13.8-inch red front brakes lend the Honda Civic Type R the ability to come to a full stop from 113 km/h in just 43 meters!

4. The Civic Type R’s Appearance Isn’t Too Shabby Either

The Type R’s first-rate brakes aren’t the only element of red on this sultry ride to get excited about. Should students completing an auto mechanic apprenticeship happen to catch sight of this fierce beast on the road, they’d see striking touches of red also accentuating the Civic’s wheels and undercarriage.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Civic Type R is also outfitted with red accenting throughout its interior. Drivers can enjoy sitting on fiery red seats while using a luxurious leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching. This ready-for-racing color can also be found complementing the seatbelts, dashboard, and shift stick. It makes the Type R one hatchback you don’t want to mess with.
