4 Reasons Why Pros With Dispatcher Training Are So Excited About the 2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
December 28, 2017
With an estimated 3.3 million units sold since its original launch in 1995, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is one of the most popular commercial vehicles of all time. Powerful, versatile, and dependable, the van has become an essential part of the fleets of transport and logistics organizations of all kinds.
As a result, it should come as no surprise that there is a fair amount of buzz in the sector about the next-generation model, which is due to hit the market in the second half of 2018. Earlier this month, the German auto manufacturer unveiled more details about what to expect. Read on to find out why students in dispatch programs should be excited.
1. The 2018 Sprinter Will Boast a Sleek New Design
Since it is manufactured by Mercedes-Benz, the Sprinter has always been one of the more aesthetically pleasing vans on the market. However, the 2018 model looks set to take the design to a whole new level.
A preview sketch released by the company in September revealed a slick, futuristic look with striking redesigned headlights. The design appears to be modeled on Mercedes’ Vision Van concept, which the manufacturer displayed at various auto shows back in 2016.
2. Mercedes Offers a Range of Options for the Sprinter to Suit Different Dispatching Needs
One of the Sprinter’s biggest selling points has always been its versatility. The van is used for both short-haul and long-haul deliveries, passenger transport, and in the construction and trades sector, and has even begun to gain popularity as a recreational vehicle.
With that in mind, Mercedes has aimed to ensure that the new model offers as many different options as possible. Buyers can choose from four different engine options, four body lengths, and three roof heights, while the drivetrain will be available in front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive.
The cargo area can also be equipped to suit different purposes. Food delivery companies, for instance, can order a model with different climate zones in the cargo compartments. This wide range of choice should ensure that the next-generation Sprinter becomes a common fixture in the future workplaces of students in dispatcher courses.
3. Graduates of Dispatcher Courses Could See an EV Sprinter in the Future
Mercedes-Benz also plans to manufacture an EV version of the new Sprinter. While not many details about it have been revealed at this point, it is set to be called the eSprinter, and will feature a 41.4 kilowatt battery with an estimated 160km range.
As exciting as this new option could be for logistics professionals, it is worth noting that the limited battery life means it may not be for everyone. The head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Volker Mornhinweg, has suggested that it would be more suited to companies that make short-haul deliveries in urban areas, adding that the company will work to consult with businesses to determine whether electric drive would be a viable option for their routes.
4. Professionals With Dispatcher Training Will Love the Sprinter’s Telematics Features
Students in dispatcher training are well aware of the crucial role that vehicle telematics plays in modern logistics, and will be pleased to learn that the new Sprinter comes loaded with tech features that will make their future careers easier.
The van will feature the Mercedes Pro telematics system, which includes a cloud-based fleet management tool, cargo monitoring, and a Linux-based platform to integrate third-party apps. Drivers can also make use of safety assistance features such as emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, as well as USB charging facilities and a WiFi hotspot to keep them connected while on the move.
