All-New McLaren 650S Replacement to Launch in 2018

This month, British supercar manufacturer McLaren announced that it is planning to release a replacement for its 650S model. The new McLaren will be hitting the roads sometime in 2018. The model, currently referred to as the P14, is expected to receive an entirely new design that will set it apart from McLaren’s current line-up and create a new standard for the automaker’s future models.

If you’re planning to pursue and automotive career, read on to learn more about both McLaren’s 650S model and its upcoming P14 model.

Price, Features and Automotive Specs of the McLaren 650S

The McLaren 650S debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, and was originally packaged as an affordable alternative to the British carmaker’s ultimate supercar, the P1. In North America, the 650S was released to compete with Porsche models within the same price bracket.

Students pursuing careers in auto know that the coupe version of the 650S has a starting price of about $287,000 and the convertible starts at approximately $305,000. While most people would agree that neither version of this car is cheap by any means, when compared to the P1 (which boasts a starting price of $1.3 million) the 650S can certainly be considered the more affordable option.

The 650S is not lacking in auto technology as it boasts a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer chassis, and is powered by the McLaren M838T: a 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbo engine that puts out 641hp and can go from 0-62mph in 3 seconds. The convertible spider version weighs 40 kilos more, but offers nearly identical performance. Both models have a top speed of around 205mph (330 km/h) and use a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox transmission.

The P14: The Car That’s Expected to Replace and Outperform the 650S

The all-new supercar is a part of McLaren’s commitment to release a new model every year. In 2015, the auto company released its 675LT, which is a racetrack-focused version of the 650S, featuring better braking, a lighter body and slightly faster acceleration.

The British auto manufacturer has announced that its P14 will feature a 3.8-litre twin turbo engine, similar to the one found under the hood of the 650S, but slightly more powerful. The new model is expected to surpass the 666hp that the current 675LT produces.

Frank Stephenson, McLaren design director, said that the design of the P14 will be “even crazier” than the P1 Hypercar. Although theP14 will be setting the design stage for their next round of automobiles, a few of the company’s trademarks, such as side-mounted air intakes and front bumper design, will most likely remain.
