3 Things Automotive Business Managers Should Know About Tesla’s Master Plan ‘Part Deux’

Part one of Tesla’s master plan, first published in 2006, is still largely unfulfilled, but what has been accomplished is amazing. Part one explained that Tesla hoped to build an electric sports car that is expensive, use that money to build a more affordable car, use that money to build an even more affordable car, and also provide electric power generation options for the American population.

With the successful release of the Tesla Roadster and the continuously increasing sales for the Model S, Tesla has definitely achieved the first two steps in their master plan. But now, without crossing off the last half of the list, Tesla has released a second plan, entitled ‘Master Plan, Part Deux.’ Tesla is a company focused on ‘sustainability,’ which Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, underlines is not “some silly, hippy thing – it matters for everyone.” And he’s right. Sustainability means a future for life on earth, and ‘Part Deux’ of the master plan could take us three steps closer.

Continue reading to discover three things that Tesla hopes to accomplish in the future, and what it might mean for automotive students concerned about sustainability.

1. Automotive Business Managers Should Keep their Eyes on Tesla’s Terrestrial Transport

Currently, Tesla has released its sports car (the Tesla Roadster), its mid-sized luxury sedan (the Tesla Model S), and the Model X, the cross-over SUV dubbed the “most capable sport utility vehicle in the world.” But, as always, Tesla has bigger plans. The automaker is planning its foray into the fold of other car segments as well, which includes producing a Tesla pick-up truck, a compact SUV, and the Model 3, an affordable compact car. With these new additions, many experts believe Tesla is poised to overtake another huge portion of the industry.

Not only that, Tesla also plans to move into producing electric heavy-duty trucks and public urban transport vehicles. Pre-orders for the Model 3 have already started, and Tesla has already seen 130,000 of them role in, meaning the Model 3 is already slated to be a success. By the time you’ve finished your automotive business manager training, you may be seeing some Model 3s rolling around the city.

2. Automotive Business Managers May Know Driving Might Soon Become Autonomous

Tesla is currently doing what was thought to be impossible just a few years ago: producing cars that actually drive themselves. Dubbed ‘autonomy’ technology, this new Tesla feature is already being used in cars around the world, and autonomous Teslas are driving about 4.8 million kilometers per day. Tesla is confident that the autonomous cars are actually safer than human controlled cars. The ability for cars to control themselves opens up a whole world of opportunities for Tesla owners, including the ability to share your car with others. When ‘autopilot’ becomes approved by government regulators, you will be able to ‘summon’ your Tesla from anywhere, and it can drive to pick you up. Not only that, but it can drive to pick up anyone! Tesla has plans to have a fleet of available Teslas that can be used like taxis for anyone that needs a lift. If you’re an automotive business manager, keep in mind that the world of transport may be changing sooner rather than later.

3. Automotive Business Managers May See Solar Powered Dealerships Soon

A huge part of Tesla’s plan is to make solar power accessible to everyone. Tesla is hoping to create a solar roof and battery product that empowers individuals to have their own sources of power. Tesla recently acquired SolarCity, the largest provider of solar energy services in North America, which is producing a solar roof. Rather than panels placed on the roof, SolarCity’s new roof is comprised of small solar panels about the size of shingles.

Tesla has big plans for the future of the automotive industry with these latest goals outlined by its ‘Master Plan, Part Deux.’
